Bayu is a talented but unrecognised spirit channeller trying to work his way up through the ranks of shamans in the beloved trance parties of his Indonesian village. In these rituals villagers willingly allow themselves to be possessed by animal spirits — buffalo, ants, tigers, monkeys, leeches — and those possessed are called pelamun. When his village faces forced eviction, Bayu sees the trance party as the only way to raise enough money to buy back their water source and save everything they love. But becoming the shaman he dreams of being is harder than anyone imagined.
