Manchester United's 15-year-old wonderkid JJ Gabriel has asked to leave the club and formally requested that his registration be cancelled, according to reports from The Telegraph. The development arrives as a major surprise to United, coming just a day before Michael Carrick had been expected to include Gabriel in his squad for their Carabao Cup tie against Brighton.

Because Gabriel is still too young to sign a scholar contract — which he can't do until he turns 16 in October, with a professional deal not possible until 17 — his request centres on becoming a free agent rather than a conventional transfer request. However, United are not powerless in the situation: under Premier League youth registration rules, a club can challenge a termination request if all parties — the club, the player, and his parent or guardian — don't agree, with the League able to step in and hand down a binding decision if a dispute arises. Gabriel has enjoyed a breakout campaign, having been named the U18 Premier League Player of the Season for 2025/26 after scoring 20 goals in 21 league appearances, and he recently became United's youngest-ever scorer in the UEFA Youth League with a hat-trick against Sabah.
